Popeye the Sailor Man
First appearing on January 17, 1929 in the daily Thimble Theatre comic strip by King Features, Popeye the Sailor Man would become its most popular character. Elzie Crisler Segar created the character. Originally Popeye's great strength came from rubbing the head feathers of a "whiffle hen" named Bernice, but eventually this would evolve to the classic can of spinach we know of today. Despite being a man of simple means and low education, Popeye would succeed where everyone else failed, overcoming obstacles with his super-human abilities and unconventional and often humorous solutions.
