The British Royal Mint is proud to introduce the first of three coins in the Myths and Legends Series honoring the legendary hero Beowulf. Believed by scholars to have originated between the eighth and the eleventh centuries, the poem Beowulf is the longest surviving poem in Old English. Aspects of Christian allegory can also be found in the poem, with the titular character Beowulf representing the fight of good over evil, and the first villain of the tale, Grendel, said to have been descended from the biblical Cain, the first murderer. The Silver Beowulf and Grendel coin has a purity level at .999 fine and are minted at The Royal Mint.
